Band 5 to Band 6 – what did your manager look for?

JingOct 21, 2026

I have been a Band 5 for 2 years in A&E. I want to apply for Band 6 but I am not sure what makes a strong application. Did anyone do this recently?

Two years in A&E is a strong base. Managers usually look for: • Evidence of leadership, e.g. taking charge of a bay, mentoring students or new international nurses. • A project or audit you have led, even a small one. • Extra training relevant to the role (e.g. ILS/ALS, triage). • Examples using the STAR method in your supporting statement and interview. Talk to your manager early and ask what gaps they see. Many trusts also run Band 6 development programmes.

Very helpful, thank you. I have been mentoring two new nurses from India and the Philippines, I will write about that.
